While it's true that quality often comes with a price tag in the service industry, don't make snagging a discount your main focus. Still, it's worth exploring your options. Get three in-home or virtual estimates from reputable movers and compare them on a level playing field. Consider the estimated hours each company anticipates (or the weight if long distance), the number of movers they plan to use, and their certification and reputation.
Weekends and summers are prime time for moving companies, so if you can swing a weekday move during the off-season, you might score a better deal.
Cut down on moving costs by decluttering. The weight (for long-distance moves) or time (for local moves) of your belongings impacts the cost. Why move things you no longer use? Sort your items into piles: keep what you use, donate quality items you don't, and toss the rest. Moving fewer items means fewer boxes, less truck space, and less time for the moving crew.
The price of cardboard boxes can add up. Rather than buying all new boxes, see if local stores will let you pick up some of their old boxes. Most businesses plan to recycle those boxes anyway, so if you call ahead they might just give them to you.
